Module 15 Self Potrait

Image
Title: Self Portrait Artist: Amrita Sher-Gil Oil on Canvas 72 cm X 92.5 cm  1930 Self Portrait as a Blond Lynn Hershman Leeson Installation Photograph 2015 Selms Selman - Self Potrait Selma Selman Sculpture 10x12cm 2015 1. I selected these pieces because I truly enjoyed each of them. The first one I like because it does not looked forced like many self portraits do. Instead, the woman is casually smiling and looks genuinely happy. The second and third ones I like because they use unconditional methods and are very abstract. The second one surprises the viewer. The actually piece does not represent what one would expect its title to show. the third one creates the features of a face and forces the viewer to then put together the rest of the face. 2. Why did you select the media to create your self-portrait? To create my self-portrait I taped several pieces of paper on the wall. I then used my hands and paint to crea...

Module 15 project 5

1.      1.   Use the vocabulary you have learned in class to describe this artwork or performance in detail. When first looking at this piece the viewer’s eye travels around it looking for a place to start viewing it from. The viewer’s eye then gets led from the right to the left, because all of the beings point and are directed towards the left.  Many of the beings also stand out because of their value. The background is mostly dark gray, leading the viewer’s eye to the bright, white figures in front of it. The piece also draws in the viewer because of its varying textures. Some beings are filled with what looks like tiny words, creating a bumpy texture. Others are shaded making them appear smoother. Overall, the piece has large feeling of movement. When looking at t, it is hard to focus on one spot. Each spot leads the viewer’s eye onto the next. 1.        2.  What processes were used to create this work? What social influ...

Module 16 Reflections

1. What were you expectations for this course and where they met? My expectations for this course was to learn a lot. They were most definitely met. I am glad I was able to take this course because I was able to learn a lot about a topic I love, art. I learned why I like some pieces more than others and what artists do to direct the viewer's eye. 2. Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your initial posting? My definition of art is mostly the same as my original. Art is everything and everywhere. Art can be the words we speak or even just the doodles we draw. What one sees as art, could not even be considered art to another person. Art is this big beautiful concept. A concept that ranges and can engulf almost anything we do. 3. Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why d...

Module 13 & 14 Art Exhibit Reflection

The Horror in Beauty is an art exhibit that tells a story. A story about how society has unrealistic beauty standards that it expects women to fit into. The story begins with several pieces showing these beauty standards. These include traits such as big breasts, small waists, quiet mouth, and an overall perfect size 2 appearance. These pieces are followed a single piece titled Interior News Feed, this piece shows how the beauty standards portrayed by the media and society have gone off the rails. Leading women to lose control as well. The next part of this story features several pieces showing how women destroy themselves and lose themselves in order to be accepted as beautiful in our society. The final piece shows what would happen if everyone did conform to society's idea of beauty. The worlds women population would alter and everyone would be forced to look exactly the same. This is symbolized by the "Robot Army". Overall, society has set standards that little to no...

Module 13 & 14 Video Review

1. For both videos I learned several things. I learned that in order to be an Art Curator you must have a very open mind. In many cases the pieces you need to make your exhibit the best it can be, you don't necessarily like. However, you must work past this because you do not have the same taste and interests as every single person that will be viewing your exhibit. An exhibit also needs to have variety. Without variety the viewer's will get bored and not want to view your exhibit. It also is important to get a second opinion. When working on something so close and dear to your heart, you will not be able to see its mistakes. This means that you need to ask someone else to look at it to make sure it is the best it can be. I also learned how museums have so many pieces of art in storage. I had never realized that, I just thought the pieces got sent to another museum. I also enjoyed how the video touched on the fact that comics are art. Many people do not see this as that. they i...

Module 12 Video Review

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above. The two videos I choose were, Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the '50s and '60s, and Uncertainty: Modernity and Art. These two titles instantly jumped out at me. Not only do they sound like they go into depth about abstract art, which I love, they also bring in separate interesting topics. The first one bring in history. I have always thought art from the '50s and '60s was especially beautiful. The second has the word uncertainty. This world automatically makes me wonder and guess what the video could be about. 2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. The first video, Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the 50's and 60's, automatically begins with an interesting sentence. It explains how in abstract art, the title is so the viewer can figure out what the painting is and feels, not just what it shows. I love this line. Many people do...

Module 11: Video Review

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above. The videos I chose were Dada and Surrealism, and Expressionism. I chose these two video because they sounded the most interesting. I personally enjoy works that have these elements, and I always wondered what helped shift artwork from the classical style that is usually seen. Both these videos emphasize the abstract views that I love.  2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. The first video I watched was Dada and Surrealism. Kurt Schwitter's was one of the first people to use abstract ideas. After the war he created pieces using things he found in his everyday life. This was not anticipated at all and many people did not understand this art. He in fact helped create a larger meaning of the word art, by expanding its definition.  This video also explains how arts can have many meanings behind their creations. They do not always have to be serious messages. ...

Module 11 Gallery Visit

Image
Step 1: The Exhibition Questions about the exhibit: 1. What is the title of the exhibit? Out of Sight! Art of the Senses 2. What is the theme of the exhibition? The theme of the exhibit was the fact that in our everyday lives all five of our senses come together at every instant. Even though we might not necessarily realize it. The art pieces in this exhibit each emphasized certain senses or multiple senses to show the viewer and help the viewer bring their senses together. This allows the viewer to make the unfamiliar, familiar. Step 2: The Gallery Questions about the physical space: 1. What type of lighting is used? The lightening used was interesting. I had never put together the fact that the lighting can change the mood of an exhibit. Pieces that were darker had darker more mood lighting. This added to their already eerie vibe and made the viewer feel the piece more in-depth. Pieces that were bright of reflect had brighter lighting. This allowed them to stand out a...

Module 10 Video Review

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above. I chose the videos, Buddhism and Hinduism, because I find these two very interesting. I also remember learning about them in high school. I always enjoyed the lessons about them and wished they were longer and more in depth. 2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. For the first video, Hinduism, I learned that Hinduism has been around for about 3000 years. Hindu's can worship anywhere, meaning they do not have to be in a church. Some rituals are focused on removing pain and are dedicated to their gods. Hinduism also focusing on letting go of things, emphasizing on the fact that you cannot take it with you once you die. For the second video, Buddhism, I learned a lot. Buddhism began because the Prince who found it say all that was wrong in the world and was lost. He didn't know how the world could be so bad. I feel like many people can relate to this. I kno...

Module 10 Mask

Image
I selected this piece because its bright colors caught my eye. I enjoyed the whole look of this mask and really liked that it resembled more like a hat than the rest of the masks. The use of color draws the viewers eye in to the mask. The feathers then use line to direct the viewers out of the piece making it feel larger than it actually is. Overall the mask gives this feeling of harmony because of the symmetrical feathers and color distribution.  I choose this mask because I liked that nature as used in its creation. I also overall just really liked the whole abstract feel about it. Color is used in this piece with the fact that the mask is black. This causes it to stand out against the neutral colors. This piece also uses variety, the fact that the face is so little compared to the rest of the mask causes the viewer's eyes to go to it. The main reason I picked this piece is because it was so abstract. I liked that i could not necessarily make out what the piece...

Module 9 Video Review

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above. The videos I chose were the  Power of Art: 1 Caravaggio, and Velazquez . I chose these videos because unlike artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo, these artists aren't typically house hold names. I grew up constantly hearing about how great Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo were and still are. However,I never heard about Caravaggio and Velazquez. By picking these videos I was hoping to learn more about them, the untold great artists. 2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. In Power of Art: 1 Caravaggio, I was able to learn about Caravaggio's life. His childhood was very sad, because both of his parents died. I also learned that in his time art was all about perfection. However, Caravaggio did not listen to this and instead focused on recreating what was going on in the now. I also like how he never took the time to draw first, he just went ...

Module 9 Hand Drawing

Image
1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing? I personally liked using my hand as subject matter for my drawing. I have recently tried to start drawing more, even though I am not the best, but I could never think of anything to draw. By drawing my hands I realized that there is inspiration everywhere. One could draw anything or even nothing and it could be art. Art is what you make it. 2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why? I selected a pencil for my drawing. I am not the best at drawing. In fact I am kind of horrible. So, i thought pencil would be best to work with because it can erase. However, I did not erase as much in my piece. Instead, I tried to incorporate my mistakes into it and make it more interesting. 3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand? At first I thought drawing with my left hand was going to be impossible. I can barely draw with my right hand, so I was wondering how bad this stu...

Module 8 Video Review

1. Explain why you selected the video you choose from the selection listed above. I decided for my second video to pick, The Measure of all things: Greek Art and the Human Figure. I picked this video because I thought it would go deeper in the idea of the human figure which the first video talked about. This topic is interesting because there is no definite definition for human body. We all have one and they all are so unique in their own ways. They can be almost any shape of size. 2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. For the first video I really enjoyed the fact that the narrator discussed the fact that the media's and art's representations of the human body do not actually look like the average human bodies. I learned how this idea is sort of recent. In the past figures of woman's bodies were as similarly unrealistic. However, they were not stick thin with hourglass figures. Instead, they were the opposite. They had extradited weight and sex...
