Image
Title: Self Portrait Artist: Amrita Sher-Gil Oil on Canvas 72 cm X 92.5 cm  1930 Self Portrait as a Blond Lynn Hershman Leeson Installation Photograph 2015 Selms Selman - Self Potrait Selma Selman Sculpture 10x12cm 2015 1. I selected these pieces because I truly enjoyed each of them. The first one I like because it does not looked forced like many self portraits do. Instead, the woman is casually smiling and looks genuinely happy. The second and third ones I like because they use unconditional methods and are very abstract. The second one surprises the viewer. The actually piece does not represent what one would expect its title to show. the third one creates the features of a face and forces the viewer to then put together the rest of the face. 2. Why did you select the media to create your self-portrait? To create my self-portrait I taped several pieces of paper on the wall. I then used my hands and paint to crea...

Module 15 project 5

1.      1.   Use the vocabulary you have learned in class to describe this artwork or performance in detail. When first looking at this piece the viewer’s eye travels around it looking for a place to start viewing it from. The viewer’s eye then gets led from the right to the left, because all of the beings point and are directed towards the left.  Many of the beings also stand out because of their value. The background is mostly dark gray, leading the viewer’s eye to the bright, white figures in front of it. The piece also draws in the viewer because of its varying textures. Some beings are filled with what looks like tiny words, creating a bumpy texture. Others are shaded making them appear smoother. Overall, the piece has large feeling of movement. When looking at t, it is hard to focus on one spot. Each spot leads the viewer’s eye onto the next. 1.        2.  What processes were used to create this work? What social influ...

Module 16 Reflections

1. What were you expectations for this course and where they met? My expectations for this course was to learn a lot. They were most definitely met. I am glad I was able to take this course because I was able to learn a lot about a topic I love, art. I learned why I like some pieces more than others and what artists do to direct the viewer's eye. 2. Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your initial posting? My definition of art is mostly the same as my original. Art is everything and everywhere. Art can be the words we speak or even just the doodles we draw. What one sees as art, could not even be considered art to another person. Art is this big beautiful concept. A concept that ranges and can engulf almost anything we do. 3. Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why d...

Module 13 & 14 Art Exhibit Reflection

The Horror in Beauty is an art exhibit that tells a story. A story about how society has unrealistic beauty standards that it expects women to fit into. The story begins with several pieces showing these beauty standards. These include traits such as big breasts, small waists, quiet mouth, and an overall perfect size 2 appearance. These pieces are followed a single piece titled Interior News Feed, this piece shows how the beauty standards portrayed by the media and society have gone off the rails. Leading women to lose control as well. The next part of this story features several pieces showing how women destroy themselves and lose themselves in order to be accepted as beautiful in our society. The final piece shows what would happen if everyone did conform to society's idea of beauty. The worlds women population would alter and everyone would be forced to look exactly the same. This is symbolized by the "Robot Army". Overall, society has set standards that little to no...

Module 13 & 14 Video Review

1. For both videos I learned several things. I learned that in order to be an Art Curator you must have a very open mind. In many cases the pieces you need to make your exhibit the best it can be, you don't necessarily like. However, you must work past this because you do not have the same taste and interests as every single person that will be viewing your exhibit. An exhibit also needs to have variety. Without variety the viewer's will get bored and not want to view your exhibit. It also is important to get a second opinion. When working on something so close and dear to your heart, you will not be able to see its mistakes. This means that you need to ask someone else to look at it to make sure it is the best it can be. I also learned how museums have so many pieces of art in storage. I had never realized that, I just thought the pieces got sent to another museum. I also enjoyed how the video touched on the fact that comics are art. Many people do not see this as that. they i...

Module 12 Video Review

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above. The two videos I choose were, Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the '50s and '60s, and Uncertainty: Modernity and Art. These two titles instantly jumped out at me. Not only do they sound like they go into depth about abstract art, which I love, they also bring in separate interesting topics. The first one bring in history. I have always thought art from the '50s and '60s was especially beautiful. The second has the word uncertainty. This world automatically makes me wonder and guess what the video could be about. 2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. The first video, Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the 50's and 60's, automatically begins with an interesting sentence. It explains how in abstract art, the title is so the viewer can figure out what the painting is and feels, not just what it shows. I love this line. Many people do...

Module 11: Video Review

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above. The videos I chose were Dada and Surrealism, and Expressionism. I chose these two video because they sounded the most interesting. I personally enjoy works that have these elements, and I always wondered what helped shift artwork from the classical style that is usually seen. Both these videos emphasize the abstract views that I love.  2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. The first video I watched was Dada and Surrealism. Kurt Schwitter's was one of the first people to use abstract ideas. After the war he created pieces using things he found in his everyday life. This was not anticipated at all and many people did not understand this art. He in fact helped create a larger meaning of the word art, by expanding its definition.  This video also explains how arts can have many meanings behind their creations. They do not always have to be serious messages. ...
