Module 12 Video Review
1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
The two videos I choose were, Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the '50s and '60s, and Uncertainty: Modernity and Art. These two titles instantly jumped out at me. Not only do they sound like they go into depth about abstract art, which I love, they also bring in separate interesting topics. The first one bring in history. I have always thought art from the '50s and '60s was especially beautiful. The second has the word uncertainty. This world automatically makes me wonder and guess what the video could be about.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
The first video, Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the 50's and 60's, automatically begins with an interesting sentence. It explains how in abstract art, the title is so the viewer can figure out what the painting is and feels, not just what it shows. I love this line. Many people do not like abstract art. They dismiss it because they cannot say what it shows. However, the point of abstract art is to look beyond what the artist is showing you and find what the artist is trying to tell you. The video explains how in abstract art the viewer and the piece meet in the middle, forcing the viewer to use their imagination.
The second video, Uncertainty: Modernity and Art, was also very interesting. In the past people were only able to relate to art in the most basic sense because it was literal statues of people and scenes. However, now with abstract art people are forced to find themselves in abstract art. For example, a male looking at a statue of a male can relate because they are both male. With abstract art, the male could look at an abstract painting and now has to finder deeper connections with the piece. He can look at a blue square and find hope, or maybe a childhood memory of swimming. The video also goes into how people of today are always thinking about what is next. Art allows us to take a second and appreciate a moment or feeling.
2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos allowed me to appreciate the reading better. It went into the key ideas that the reading was about, by showing them to me in various pieces of art. The videos also allowed me to see another point of view from the reading. This allows me to connect the two and remember them better.
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
These videos were my favorite videos so far. They went completely into the world of abstract art. They also allowed me to see why I love abstract art so much. I love being creative, coming up with my own ideas, and things that are seen as unconventional. Abstract art allows me to do all of those things. When one looks at a piece of abstract art, there is no wrong answer. What that piece means is completely up to the viewer. This means that abstract art has a million different meanings. Abstract art also allows the viewer to put themselves into the art. What could make someone remember their best memory one day, could also make them remember their worst. This is what makes abstract art so beautiful. It can be everything or anything. In a way it can also be both.
